History

The Himalayas - where earth meets sky
Indian Himalayas - Kumaon

Economy
The economy is based on the principle of scanty food supply. Each family sends out at least one male member down to the Desh (plains) for service. The women folk and the remaining male members take care of the agriculture and cattle at home. However, the backbone of the Kumaon economy is forestry, which has the distinction of producing good timber. The people realize the value of forest wealth and there is growing awareness of the importance of afforestation in order to ensure that future generations are not deprived of their rich heritage.

There are vast resources of hydroelectricity which can be tapped. The opening of new roads has made the area more accessible, which has resulted in hydroelectricity development projects being undertaken. Also horticulture and other allied industries are developing. Another aspect of Kumaon's economy is the increase in the number of people going in search of better land, milder climate, easier conditions of living and new prospects of advancement in the fertile Terai. This is resulting in a fast development of new agro-industrial areas in Terai, which once used to be thickly wooded and abounded with wild animals. As a result, the populations of several wild species are being affected.
