Recent Changes in the Bhotia Way of Life
Over the years, there have been marked changes in the life and culture of the Bhotias, brought about primarily by the war of 1962 and the advent of modern civilization into these tracts. The cessation of trans-border trade across the high Himalayan passes has brought about a traumatic change in the lives of the Bhotias of Pithoragarh. This was the single most important factor responsible for changes in their lives. Some trading outposts were abandoned as a result of this, although they are still being used as summer residences and high altitude pastures. The people have also taken to potato cultivation in the high altitude areas. Many Bhotia families maintain permanent homes in the lower valleys, while moving to higher elevations only during the summer months.
