Monastic Buddhism is practised in Kinnaur. Religious activity revolves around the monastery or gompa. Lamas, both men and women, live and perform religious activities in the monasteries. They are looked upon as holy people. Boys are usually initiated into lamaism when very young. They join the monastery to which their parents or family owe allegiance. The young lamas quickly adapt to the religious life of the monastery of which they usually remain a part for their whole life. The Lamas belong to two sects
The girls initiated into this religious life are known as Zomos or Jamos. They live in nunneries and learn Tibetan scriptures or Buddhist doctrines. Usually, there are no restrictions on their marriage. |
