Kalpa and Peo
Kalpa is a small town situated on the main Himalayan range, high up in the Satluj Valley. The region around Kalpa receives relatively more rainfall than the core desert areas. Dry deodar and chilgoza pine forests cover the slopes. Kalpa was previously the headquarters of Kinnaur District. However, as this town was prone to avalanches in winter, a new district headquarters has been made at Peo.

The traveler is rewarded with beautiful snow views from Kalpa, including that of the revered Kinner Kailash peak. This town is connected by a motor road with the main Hindustan-Tibet road. Rest houses and small inns are available for travelers.

Reckpong Peo is the new headquarters of Kinnaur District. It is situated below Kalpa in a sheltered area surrounded by chilgoza pine forests. Accommodation is also available for travelers at Peo.

Pooh
Pooh is a small town situated in the core zone of the cold desert on the slopes above the Satluj River. This tract is characterized by arid conditions: Pooh has a total annual precipitation of only 40 cm in the form of both rain and snow.

The area around Pooh resembles a lunar scape with barren mountains and large scree slopes. This town is on the main Hindustan-Tibet road.

Moorang
Moorang is a large village situated near the banks of the Satluj River in the cold desert region of Kinnaur. It is set in scenic surroundings. Moorang is approached from the Hindustan- Tibet road.
