Kaokoland Nature Reserve

The Kaokoland Nature Reserve is located in northwestern Namibia and is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Skeleton Coast Park. Open to visitors throughout the year, the reserve extends over more than one million hectares of wide grassy plains and mountain ranges. This reserve is certainly not recommended for comfort-loving tourists as no accommodation facilities are provided. However, it is ideal for people who appreciate viewing nature from an isolated place. Visitors generally camp near dry river beds. 4X4 vehicles are a must for visiting this reserve, and groups of 2 or more are highly recommended. Visitors must themselves carry all food, water, spares, a first-aid kit and camping equipment. The rewards include a chance to see at close quarters animals such as the elephant, black rhino, giraffe, springbok, lion and ostrich. Visitors opting to camp need to be aware that there are lions in the reserve!
