A few of the incredible wildlife and birdlife records that Uganda is proud of: it is ranked #2 in Africa and #9 in the world with regard to the number of mammal species that live in it; it is also home to about half of the bird species to be found in Africa. Uganda's tourist industry has, however, had its ups and downs. During the 1950s and the 1960s, Uganda was the premier tourist spot in Africa. However, civil war in the 1970s and the 1980s destroyed the industry and the number of animals rapidly dwindled. Since 1986, however, the industry has been recovering rapidly. The country has returned to peace, donor countries have contributed to wildlife rehabilitation, and today the tourist industry is on is way to recovering its former glory.
