Abuko Nature Reserve, Gambia
Surprisingly accessible, the Abuko Nature Reserve is located 20 km from Banjul. It is open to visitors throughout the year. The reserve is well managed and contains a tremendous diversity in vegetation. Visitors can observe animals like the sitatunga antelope, duiker, green vervet and red colobus monkey. The bird life is even more abundant here with over 200 species of birds. Visitors can observe greater concentrations of monkeys in the winters when migratory birds from Europe reach the park to spend the winter. Birds that can be observed include the Senegal parrot, lily trotter, pelican, pied kingfisher, glossy starling, varieties of turaco, flycatcher and sunbird.
