South Africa : Umfolozi Game Reserve

The Umfolozi Game Reserve is a 48,000 hectare reserve located in Northern Kwazulu Natal, near Mtubatuba. The reserve connects to the Hluhluwe Reserve via an 8 km wide strip of land extending 21,000 hectares and known as the "Umfolozi-Hluhluwe Corridor". Together, the two reserves and the corridor cover an area of about 100,000 hectares. The reserve consists largely of hilly country and floodplains along the Black and White Umfolozi Rivers. Wildlife includes the lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, white and black rhino, spotted hyena, zebra, giraffe, wild dog, antelopes and more than 400 bird species.
Accommodation is available in the form of self-catering chalets, cottages, huts and bush camps. Visitors can spot wildlife from game viewing drives on a 85 km network of roads, as well as game walks, hides and wilderness trails. Malaria is common in the region, so precautions need to be taken. The park is open throughout the year.
