País instantly liked what he saw, and became active in the July 26 Movement. When Castro left Cuba to train his small army in Mexico, he made País the head of all M-26-7's "action groups" that were in Cuba. País would effectively run the show until Castro returned.
País led an attack on the headquarters of the police in 1956 at the same time the Granma landed. Several other assaults were made that day and the next, but eventually País withdrew.
País was assassinated by Batista's police on July 30, 1958; his brother had been killed a month earlier. País was only twenty-three.
