Anti-Castro Exile Groups
There are now many Cuban exiles who have joined groups which, in several ways, try to bring an end to the current government in Cuba.  These groups have become very powerful in the United States.
Revolutionary Cuba
The Cuban Revolution in 1959 transformed Cuban society.  This caused many people to leave, but others stayed and support the government.  Great progress has been made, though it has come with a cost.
The Soviet Union
The world's first Communist country greatly supported Revolutionary Cuba. At the threat of American military aggression, the Soviets gave Cuba military supplies, eventually leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The United States
As the vanguard of global capitalism, the United States has made it a policy to oppose Communist nations.  When their invasion of Cuba failed, the United States placed an embargo on the island, which it maintains to this day.
