April, 1998

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien has asked Cuban President Fidel Castro to release several political prisoners.  The two held several long meetings during Chretien's visit to Cuba.

He also asked the Cuban President to alter Cuba's legal system.

The United States Government was critical of the meetings between Canada and Cuba.  It believes that Cuba should be isolated until it takes steps towards accepting the US's style of democracy.

The people in question are four prisoners who made remarks against the Cuban Communist Party.

None of them were tried, and have been in jail since the summer of 1997.
