October, 1997

A six-day-long ceremony marking the death of Che Guevara was held in Cuba.  His remains and those of a few others who fought alongside him were recovered from Bolivia, where he died.

Che was buried in Santa Clara.  A mausoleum was built there specifically for this purpose.

The ceremony, held in Santa Clara, was heavily visted by Cubans wishing to pay their respects to Che's remains.  Cuban President Fidel Castro, members of Guevara's family, and others offered flowers.

Che Guevara died in 1967 while fighting for a revolution in Bolivia.  His troops were overtaken by the Bolivian army.  Eventually he was captured, and the Bolivians and CIA executed him.
