Technology usage

All three team members worked on the project mainly using their computers at home. However, there were significant differences in the computer platforms, operating systems and the type of internet connectivity that was available. While Debangsu worked on PC's at home running Windows NT 4 and Windows 95, Simon worked on a PC running the latest Windows 98 platform. Jen, on the other side of the Atlantic, worked on a Macintosh. The platform differences caused problems from time to time, especially during transfer of files from PC's to Macs (and an argument before realizing the difference between PC-Mac browser font sizes). Moreover, video capturing equipment would generally not work on Windows NT.

snapshotDebangsu equipped his machine with a video capture card for inputting and editing his own videos, and had to install Windows 95 to make the software work. Neither he nor Simon had convenient access to scanners. Jen, on the other hand, could access scanners easily.

Jen's dial-up connectivity was generally stable and fast, and access rates were much cheaper than her teammates' due to her location. Simon was lucky enough to be working from a fast ISDN line, which proved to be quite expensive. Debangsu, however, had to deal with unreliable dialup net access. Internet connectivity from Ivory Coast, West Africa tended to vary from slow to extremely slow, apart from being rather unreliable. Moreover, the costs were enormous. While Debangsu found stable internet access during his stay in India, the costs there were significantly higher than rates in Europe and North America.
