NEWSDAY

NEWSDAY is a multi-curricular project in which our girls produced their own newspaper based on the news articles submitted to the Newsday news wire by co-operating students around the world. There is a shortened version of the Micklefield Express for you to see and photographs of the team of journalists.

Read what the girls have to say about NEWSDAY!

Sunsmart

Last year we enjoyed doing a project conducted over the Internet with Wodonga Primary School in Victoria, Australia.
This project was to do with the sun and to make us more aware of its dangers and UV radiation. It also included some scientific experiments measuring the heat of the sun and the quality of the air in Rondebosch.
This project took a lot of time and hard work.
We had to phone a number of bureaus and stations to get the information we needed about skin cancer and UV radiation levels.
We also became keypals with the children from Wodonga Primary School, Victoria, Australia.
This sun project was fun for all of us!

Story Writing Project

Seven schools around the world wrote one story, with each school responsible for a paragraph. These stories and other projects done by Duck Bay School are worth a visit.
Schools from Canada, New York, Mexico took part in our story.

The story was filled with slimy creatures and was very creepy. We enjoyed receiving the paragraphs and seeing how the story unfolded. We were kept in suspense throughout the project until the concluding paragraph was e-mailed.

It was great fun trying to figure out what to write for our own little section.

Aids Survey

The Grade 7s did a survey on AIDS Awareness. It was part of our Geography syllabus where we were focussing on population and the effects of AIDS on this. The questionnaire was sent out to schools in the Western Cape.
We were able to use 61 returns. There were 30 replies from 12 to 14 year olds, 3 from 14 to 20 year olds and 2 from over 20s.
Most people were aware about how AIDS is transmitted and that there is no cure. A large number lacked knowledge on details such as :-
symptoms
the difference between AIDS and HIV
what HIV stands for
what blood cells the disease attacks.
