Most people recover without any problems. The most common treatment is to rest until the illness has disappeared. People should also not do any kind of heavy lifting and should avoid contact sports for six to eight weeks to avoid the risk of rupturing the spleen. Fatigue from the disease can last for weeks or months after other symptoms have disappeared. Death is extremely rare and is most often caused by other factors such as an impaired immune system. Vaccines are available. However, there are some indications that there might be a link between the use of the vaccine and the cancer of the nose and throat in Southern China and a type of cancer known as Burkitt lymphoma in Africa and Asia.
