Playa Girón, located on the southern coast of the Matanzas province, was the site of the Cuban defenses during thpgwaternicee U.S.-supported Bay of Pigs attack in 1961.

Today, the village is home to not more than a hundred people, many of whom work at the modest-sized resorts and restaraunts built around the area's exquisite beaches.

The town features an excellent museum (El Museo de Playa Giron), which is mainly devoted to the Cuban victory against U.S.-led forces in the Bay of Pigs attack.  The museum is set up with maps, photographs, displays, and corresponding captions (in Spanish) along both sides of a long narrow room.  Between the walls, mortars and antiaircraft guns used by both Cuban and exile forces are display.  The museum also features an exhibit contrasting the area's impoverishment before the Revolution to the conditions today.  pgtank
