The Himalayas - where earth meets sky

Guided Tour

This is a special section of the Guided tour created especially for people using browsers without javascript and frames support. We suggest opening up a new browser window to view the different locations on our guided tour. Alternatively you can visit each location, go back using your browser to reach this index and view the next stop on the guided tour.

The Himalayas - Geology - Formation of the Himalayas

Our first stop is in the Geology section - where the story of the Himalayas began. The collision of two land masses has given rise to the highest mountain mass in the world.

Notice that all the topics listed on the Index page are listed on the left hand side of the page. These main topics are followed by the sub-topics - in this case, of the Geology section. This layout is followed throughout the site.

The Himalayas - Indian Himalayas - Garhwal - Nanda Devi Sanctuary

We have now entered the center stage of the Indian Himalayas - the majestic Garhwal region. Explore this section by following the subtopics listed on the left hand side of the page.

Notice the toolbars at the bottom of the page. The first toolbar is the navigation toolbar.

The buttons with the the forward and backward arrows can be used to navigate among different topics while exploring the Himalayas by region.
The "Map" option can be chosen to view our collection of maps of the Garhwal region.
The "Top" button sends you to the top of the page to aid navigation.
The Index button takes you to the opening page of our site from where you can choose the index that your system can support i.e. text-only, normal or java-enhanced version.

The second toolbar can be used to submit your Himalayan stories and also to view new stories submitted by others. It will be explained at a later stop in our tour.

The Himalayas - Indian Himalayas - Kinnaur - People - Kinners

We visit the legendary Kinners of the Kinnaur region of India. The Kinners are just one of the many rich and diverse cultures that have developed in the Himalayas. The relative isolation in which the Himalayan tribes lived for centuries has helped them develop strikingly distinct cultures. Information about the different people and cultures can be found along with the regions they inhabit.

The Himalayas - Nepal Himalayas Mount Everest - Early Years

Our next destination is Nepal and we stop by at the highest mountain peak on earth - Mount Everest. On this page you can read about the early exploration of the mountain and the pioneering attempts to climb the world's highest peak.

Use the Real Audio links on our site to hear streaming audio files having related information. For example, follow the first Real Audio link near the top of the text to hear Sir Edmund Hillary's views on Mount Everest. If you have not installed the Real player yet, you can follow the link provided and download it from www.real.com.

The Himalayas - Tibet Himalayas

We now reach the northern frontiers of the Himalayas. We are now at Tibet - the Roof of the world. Explore the region by following the sub topics in the left hand side of the screen.

Below the text are placed two toolbars. The first one has already been explained. The second toolbar is useful for adding and viewing new content to our site. If you have a Himalayan story to share with the rest of us, you can choose Make a contribution and submit your content. Choose "View new stories" to view new information uploaded by other visitors to our site.

The Himalayas - Trekking

We explore one of the most popular ways to explore the mountains - trekking. Trekking is more than a sport because often, it is the only way to reach far-flung destinations of the Himalayas where cars and buses cannot go.

The Himalayas - Flora and fauna - Tiger

The Himalayas is well-known for its fantastic biodiversity. Here, we follow the story of the majestic Panthera Tigris - commonly known as the Bengal tiger. Follow the sub topics on the left bar to explore the wide range of flora and fauna related topics covered by us.

The Himalayas - Environmental problems - Glaciers

In the Environmental Problems section, we study the various environmental problems that affect the Himalayas. Some of the problems are man-made while others occur from natural processes. The lovely Himalayan glaciers are a spectacle and they have given rise to some exquisitely beautiful lakes. But, they also affect the Himalayas in an adverse way. Find out how.

The Himalayas - Traveler's corner

This is the traveler's corner, where Himalayan travelers from around the world meet to exchange their Himalayan stories and photographs. If you have a story to share with us, you can select the appropriate region (or topic) and choose "Contribute" and add new information to our site. To see what other travelers have written, select the "View stories" option below the Himalayan region or topic. The topics are listed on the right hand side of the screen.

The Himalayas - Test your knowledge

Finally, after taking a quick trip around the Himalayas, it is time to test your knowledge of the Himalayas. Test yourself in upto three quizzes and if you score highly , you can win prizes!

This brings you to the end of the guided tour. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did presenting it to you. Your views about our site are highly appreciated!
