in 776 BC the only event held was the foot race.

In 680 BC, chariot
racing appeared. |

Eventually the
sports offered were boxing, pankration events, running,
equestrian events, pentathlon events and wrestling.

Modern Olympic Games |
| In the first "modern
Olympics" in
Athens
in 1896 participants from thirteen countries took part in
forty-three events divided among nine sports: cycling, fencing,
gymnastics, lawn tennis, shooting, swimming, track and field,
weight lifting and wrestling. |
| In the Athens 2004 Games 28 sports are being offered. These
sports make up 37 discipline. A discipline is a branch of a
sport. For example, aquatics is a sport with four disciplines -
swimming, diving, water polo and synchronised swimming. |
| An Olympic sport for men must be widely practiced by men in at
least 75 countries in 4 continents if it is to be included in
the Olympic Games. |
| An Olympic sport for women must be practiced by women in at
least 40 countries in three continents to be included in the
Olympic Games. |
