The Ancient Olympic Games

The first Olympic Games at Olympia were held in 776 BCC.
They began as a religious festival in celebration of the King of the gods, Zeus.
They were held every four years, and continued for a thousand years.
They were held in a sacred valley in Olympia.
These games were only for Greek men.
The only race was a sprint across the stadium in the very early years. After that a few more sports were offered.

The Modern Olympic Games

The revival of the Modern Olympics was due to a Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubert in 1896

He believed that international competitions between amateur athletes would help promote friendly relationships between people from different countries.

He had a lot of opposition but he didn't give up..

It decided to hold the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1898

The games which were attended by participants from thirteen countries who participated in forty-three events divided among nine sports: cycling, fencing, gymnastics, lawn tennis, shooting, swimming, track and field, weight lifting and wrestling.

Since then, the Olympic Games has continued and has got bigger and bigger.
