Khoe Khoe Huts
The Khoe Khoe used restios
(reeds), which are one of the three fynbos plants to make their huts.
They also used sticks, animal gut and animal skins. The huts adapted
to the strong South Easterly winds and warm summers, and in winter to the
very cold temperatures and North Westerly winds. They used this to
their advantage by using these reeds. In the winter the reeds become
water tight after the first rains. This kept them warm during the
winter and kept them dry! In the summer the reeds let the air through
and they were cool at night.
They were very clever
and used the climatical conditions.
