Pollution and Predators

A penguin covered in oil
This little penguin is covered in oil from a passing tanker.  SANCCOB cares for penguins like this one.  Oil pollution is the greatest threat to penguins.
Penguins' enemies are other animals, like people, cats, dogs and sea lions.  In Betty's Bay a leopard got into the colony and killed about 120 penguins.  Eggs are being taken by people and as they take eggs there are less penguins. The penguins eggs are collected and sold and some are eaten.

The penguins food supply has been destroyed by fishermen over-fishing.

All penguins are in danger from man. There have been some very bad oil spills which have affected penguins.   Penguins can die from an oil spillage. Giant oil tankers spill oil when they break in half.  Dyer Island has been polluted several times by oil tankers when they clean out their tanks.

Pollution in South Africa is bad.  Plastic bags, fish nets, glass, bottles and cardboard are a problem too.
