Grade 6
AT&T Virtual
Classroom Contest '99
The
Grade 6 class of 2000 made up team VC05 in the AT&T
Virtual Classroom Contest '99.
Although
we were not amongst the finalists we're very proud of the website
we created with Settlers Farm Schools in Adelaide, Australia and Central
School in New Jersey, USA.
Some
Micklefield Thoughts on the Contest....
When
I heard about this project I thought it would be a lot of fun - which it
has been. Nicole
I
enjoyed working in groups with children from different countries.
Morgan
What
I enjoyed was learning that you can work in a group with other people.
Annabel
I
think it was a very good idea to have the party and to enjoy the delicious
food from different parts of the world. Amy
It
has taught me to research, make websites and most of all to work in a group.
It has taught me to cooperate, share ideas and listen to others.
Nikki
We
thought that the other teams had great ideas, we liked seeing their photos
and the recipes they sent us were delicious. Munawwar

Micklefield and Siyazakha
hired a bus and went to the Waterfront to visit the Picton
Castle, a tall ship. Crista, Kate and Daniel of Tidal
Passages were our guides. They also came to our schools and shared
the wonder and excitement of cultural and scientific exploration.
Annie brought Shadow, a cheetah
from Spier to to a hotel at the Waterfront and we were given an opportunity
to learn more about the Cheetah Outreach programme run at Spier. |
We followed
the famous Quest team as they investigated the origins of man and the disappearance
of many of Africa's animal species. At the end of the interactive
project we held an "Africa Day" at school sharing all we'd learnt with
the other classes.

MayaQuest '97: Lost
Cities of the Rainforest!
Following MayaQuest's
expedition to the last remaining rainforests in Mexico and Central America
was a wonderful interactive experience for our Grade 6 class. The MayaQuest
team, under the leadership of Dan Buettner, visited the Maya world of Guatemala.
This expedition provided a wonderful interdisciplinary
learning opportunity. We are very grateful to Doug Mason for giving us
permission to use these photographs and we hope you enjoy reading what
some of the girls had to say about the project:

"I enjoyed MayaQuest because
not many people can experience this and even though we weren't physically
with the team when I was reading something about the the journey I felt
as if I was actually with them. I could feel the insects on me, the mud
sucking into my shoes, the sweat pouring off my face and the heavy backpack." |
Alice

"My favourite report was
the Rainforest Report. I loved hearing about the huge green leaves with
dew glistening on them and the scaly snakes which slithered all around
you. I was sorry for you when I heard about the parasites that dug into
your flesh and the mosquitoes that sucked your blood. I was fascinated
with the Basilisk Lizard which has the ability to walk on water. I hope
that I too will go to visit these rainforests (if they are still there
when I come). Thanks Maya Team for giving us all that information!" |

"I loved MayaQuest. This
project was exciting and fun and I was learning new things all the time.
My favourite thing was in Julie's Journal, the one where Julie described
how she went deep into the heart of some caves to look at Maya hieroglyphics.
Another favourite was Mystery Question. It really got my brain thinking,
especially when I saw the picture of the young "prince's" tomb. MayaQuest
has helped to open a whole new world for me and I shall never think the
same of the world again." |
Nicolina

|
"What I liked the most about
MayaQuest was following the team members on their journey by reading their
Updates. It must be very exciting to find a lost city. It would be a bit
strange to be eating a giant rodent." |
Megan
says:

"I liked marking off the
places that the team went to on a map because I like Geography.
I thought that they were
mad at first, going through the jungle with only mountain bikes and lap-tops!
But as we went on I thought they were brave!" |
Michaela

"I was amazed at the way
the team persevered and it must have been tough. I found it very interesting
to find out about the kids the team met. I always took for granted that
I was at a very good school and that when I went home, I went to a nice
house. But some of those kids don't even go to school and have to work
in hotels to eat. So the idea of having Kid Profile really made me think
a lot. I also enjoyed the way MayaQuest had so much to do with our other
class subjects. We are making Mayan masks in Art, stories in Creative Writing
and we did their base 20 number system in Maths. Pedals Up!" |
