The Grade 4s visited an old age home.  We presented the residents with homemade gifts and sang to them.  We also wrote dedications to our own Grandfriends.  We shared our ideas with other children through the Grandfriends Project.

The Southern Right Whale

Grade 4 has made a valuable contibution to an international project on Endangered animals with their research on the Southern Right Whale.

A special award was given to, De Wadden School, Haarlem, (The Netherlands) and Cannelton Elementary School, Indiana, (USA) for a joint project between two schools. This unique joint web site in Dutch and English, encourages schools around the world to get involved in reporting on endangered animals in their area. Visit their Endangered Animals Project.
On 13 February, 1998 the Grade 4s (now Grade 5s) came back to school in the afternoon to chat online with school children in Holland, the USA, Ireland and Australia.  This was a first for Micklefield and a lot of fun.  The content of the chat is available on the Endangered Animals site.

Weather Watch (27 January to 7 February 1997)

We did this project with 13 schools from all over the world. One of the schools in Alaska went to school on a snow machine and at one time they couldn't go because the snow came right up to their front door. We had very interesting letters from the different schools.

The Weather watchers were very busy that week. In the morning Mrs Ball and one of the groups went outside and tested the weather. This is how they did it:-
They took a book outside to record what they did. Our teacher made a wind pointer to show which way the wind was blowing. The wind direction that we had the most was the South Easter. We looked at the sky to see if it was cloudy or clear. The clouds were cumulus a lot. The highest temperature was 29 deg C and the lowest was 21 deg C.
The Weather Watch project was a lot of fun.

Air Project

Grade 4 completed this project at the end of May. The girls learned about air through a hands-on approach. The project had an introductory module and four modules of study.
The 4 modules are:-
Why Do We Need Air?
What is Happening to Our Air?
Commercial and Recreational Uses of Air.
Clean Up Our Air Campaign.
As a class they wrote an introductory message to the other participants. This message included things of interest such as hobbies, sports, geographical information, favourite foods, social customs and historical information.
Many benefits were observed such as an increase in cultural awareness and geographical awareness, and the girls enjoyed things like 'brainstorming', 'mindmapping' and 'flowcharts'.

Here are some of their comments.

At first we did not get along well, but we soon learned to work together in groups. We all knew something so we mixed them up and came up with four good ideas for why we need air.
(Tamlyn, Juliet, Shameema and Priya)

We did an experiment to see if the air in our suburb is polluted. We took some glasses and covered them outside with Vaseline petroleum jelly and put them in different places around the school. For 4 days we kept a record of all the particles on the outside in a square 2.5cm by 2.5cm. The third day had the most because it was windy.
(Rucita, Lindsay, Juliet and Sameenah)

On May 14th it was our Open Day. Open Day is when our parents and family come to the school to watch what we have done through the past two terms.

On Open Day we did a play called "Pollution Solution". It is about Kids against pollution. During the making of the play we learned that pollution is bad for people and it should be stopped.
(Tamlyn, Rucita, Miengah, Francesca and Shahlaa)

There are two groups in "Pollution Solution", called the "Ooze Doods" - who are monsters in the play, polluting the air, and the K.A.P.Ss - which stands for Kids Against Pollution, and they are the good children.
(Emma, Shameema, Sameenah and Melissa).

We have been talking in class about stopping pollution. Half the class at the moment are doing study skills and have designed a future car and what it should run on so that it does not pollute the atmosphere. (Nontobeko, Robyn, Juliet, Zarah and Priya).

 A list of solutions:-
1. Encourage people not to use spray on deodorants or CFC sprays, but rather use roll on deodorant and anti CFC.
2. Check our cars more often.
3. All of us have pollution monsters inside. It is up to each of us not to let them get out of control.
4. Write letters to factories to ask them to check how much pollution they are putting into the air.
5. Try to stop people smoking.
6. To stop polluting and to encourage other people not to pollute either.

It is up to people all around the world to find their own pollution solution.

By all the Micklefield Grade 4s!
