Teacher Support

Sarietjie Musgrave, Eunice High, Bloemfontein

Subjects: CAT

Learners: Grade 11

The essence of the lesson was to create the opportunity for learners to share their computer knowledge with the wider community. The learners where given the challenge of providing support material for school teachers.

Community outreach was the main focus of the project:  to use the knowledge and skills of learners to help others crossing the digital divide.  The knowledge of well-resourced schools was used to help the learners from this school to better understand the need of teachers so that they could better assist those from previously disadvantaged schools in the wider community.  Girls were also given the opportunity to cross the barriers in their own minds, where many of them thought they had nothing to give to those in need; this changed for the better!

Teacher Sarietjie Musgrave reflected as follows:

  • This was a highly successful project, because learners where given the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the real world.
  • Learners became critical thinkers who came up with solutions to a very real problem in their community and the wider school community of South Africa.
  • In just one Saturday, 41 teachers from schools as far a 350 km away where given the chance to cross the digital divide.
  • The biggest change was in the attitude of the learners themselves.  They ended the project, knowing that they can play a positive role in the wider community by sharing skills, knowledge and giving of their time
