Learner Support Document

Scaffold for unit question: "Are we safe in our homes?"

Purpose

During this unit we are going to find out to what extent various natural phenomena in South Africa pose a threat to our lives.

Brainstorm - 1 Lesson

Brainstorm a list of natural phenomena that could threaten the lives of people in South Africa

Choose - 1 Lesson

During our earlier class discussion we identified a list of natural phenomena that exist in South Africa and that could pose a threat to people at times in various locations throughout the world (this list is included for the benefit of the unit portfolio, as an example of a brainstormed list):

volcanism
floods
mudslides
radiation
earthquakes
Cape storms
rockfalls
veld fires
drought
tropical cyclones
tornadoes
plagues
  1. Consider your home and your community on the one hand, and the list of threats on the other hand
  2. Choose one of the above phenomena that applies to your community or home

Research - 4 Lessons

Assess the nature and extent of the threat. In consecutive slides you should:
  1. define the phenomenon
  2. describe how it would typically threaten lives worldwide
  3. identify the areas that are most at risk to this phenomenon in South Africa
  4. differentiate between the nature of the occurrences in this country compared to worst case examples elsewhere in the world
  5. analyse the occurrences of the phenomenon in this country
  6. conclude whether it poses a risk
  7. recommend ways of minimising the risk

The educational value of the presentation

1. Evaluate the extent to which the presentation succeeds in imparting the essential body of knowledge.

Give this presentation 0-3 if:

The presentation does not contain any essential information presented by the learner.
Give this presentation 4-7 if:

The presenters share some essential information but this is limited to very basic observations.
Give this presentation 8-10 if:

The presenters share all the essential information in an interesting way

2. Evaluate the quality of the contents of the Presentation, including the accuracy, completeness and the ability to express ideas clearly.

Give this presentation 0-3 if:

Information contains numerous or fundamental errors. The content is weak and/or unorganized. Spelling is very poor.
Give this presentation 4-7 if:

The Presentation has reasonable content and presents that content in an average manner. Some ideas are expressed, but there is also direct transfer of information evident.
Give this presentation 8-10 if:

Team members have thoroughly reported on their topic and presented their knowledge in an interesting and creative manner. Ideas expressed are original and complex, with sound support from information sources. There are no spelling errors.

The following resource for research can be used

Storyboard - 1 Lesson

  1. Create a storyboard for a PowerPoint presentation in which you present the findings of your research
  2. Call me once your story board is complete. Do not start step 5 before I give you the go-ahead

Use this storyboard template

PowerPoint - 3 Lessons

  1. Create a multimedia presentation that will assist you in presenting your findings to the class
  2. You should include all the information and findings of your research in your presentation
  3. When you present this to the class it should not take less than 5 minutes or more than 10 minutes

Assessment

3. Evaluate the extent to which keywords and ideas have been identified and used with clarity and accuracy in the presentation.

Give this presentation 0-3 if:

No, or very few, key ideas have been identified. The presenter reads text from the screen or does not embroider much on the points which appear on the screen.
Give this presentation 4-7 if:

Presenter has identified keywords and ideas, but does not expand much on these ideas.
Give this presentation 8-10 if:

Presenter has made excellent use of well-chosen keywords and ideas and expands on these ideas at length.

4. Have the students provided appropriate and complete attributions for work done by others

Give this presentation 0-3 if:

Citations are consistently missing, credits are incomplete.
Give this presentation 4-7 if:

Presentation may be missing very minor citations, but the Presentation is intellectually honest.
Give this presentation 8-10 if:

References and sources are cited properly, credits reflect all work contributed by others.

Technical Quality of the Presentation

5. Evaluate the imagination, innovation, graphic design, uniformity and artistic presentation of the Presentation and its material.

Give this presentation 0-3 if:

The graphic design is unappealing and the collection of slides do not fit as a unit, having no uniformity or effective transition and animation effects.
Give this presentation 4-7 if:

The team has taken advantage of the capabilities of the programme to create a new presentation of information and materials, the pages are attractive and some uniformity exists. Transitions and animations exist, but are disruptive to the audience (inappropriate).
Give this presentation 8-10 if:

The Presentation is original, exemplifies excellent graphic design and uniformity, and uses the many capabilities of the programme to create an engaging presentation for the audience. Transitions and animations are well-chosen and inobtrusive.

6. Evaluate the use of graphics and multimedia in the presentation.

Give this presentation 0-3 if:

The Presentation contain no, or very few, graphics. Or the graphics chosen are totally inappropriate to the context of the presentation.
Give this presentation 4-7 if:

The Presentation makes some use of graphic stimuli which are not consistently appropriate. Their size and placement may also be obtrusive and demand too much attention from the audience, at the expense of the speaker.
Give this presentation 8-10 if:

The Presentation creatively exploits the use of graphics and multimedia. This is highly appropriate and tastefully done, thereby supporting the speaker, rather than competing with the speaker.
