Myths and Legends

By Wietske Felmore

South Africa has many myths and legends, a very famous one is the ghost of The Flying Dutchman. In 1641 Captain Hendrik van der Decken was sailing his ship around the Cape on his way back to Holland, a storm came up and he died in the wreck and while he was dying he vowed that he would sail until he met the ends of the earth. His ship sails forever around the Cape, but if you go too near to him your own ship will sink.

Another myth is about Aintjie Somers. Aintjie Somers is now a poltergeist because she has a habit of throwing stones. Aintjie Somers was a slave who lived a very hard life and she worked herself to death. Mothers tell their children not to cry otherwise Aintjie Somers will get you! I like finding out about Myths and Legends because I think it is interesting to know what people used to think hundreds of years ago.

Historical Fact and Stories

The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest building in Cape Town. The Castle has five battlements so that when the attackers came they could defend themselves from any angle. People say that they have seen ghosts there! We have a Mountain called Table Mountain because the top part is flat. I like to walk up there almost every month with my family and we always bring a picnic. My father and I take a walk up a path called Skeleton Gorge which I was scared of at first! I'm not frightened anymore.
