My Western Cape

Getting away from the City

Going to the beach and climbing mountains are just two of the things that I enjoy doing for recreation. Betty's Bay is a seaside village where you can see lovely sunsets. The local flora is called Fynbos and is important in Cape Town. There is also a penguin colony, where they stay and nest. There are big sand dunes and lovely mountains.

Cape Town does not usually have snow, but if you go further inland to the Ceres mountains, you may find snow in winter. Mountain climbing is fun and also exercising. It's a long walk, but worth it, as the snow is fun to play in and brings together family and friends.

Cape Town's Problem

Some times pollution comes from ships that pass by Cape Town and is called oil pollution. The pollution harms both the fish and sea birds, such as penguins. The seabirds cannot fly or swim when their feathers get oil on them from oil spills and they also get cold. At Sancob there are people that clean the birds that are covered with oil. Fishing is very important in Cape Town and if the fish are covered in oil they are not edible.

[Penguin]

There is a wind that blows in summer that is called the Cape Doctor or the South Easter as it blows away all of the smog and pollution that fills the air.
