Friends of  The Common
By Rucita (Grade 7)

On a scorching hot Thursday mid-morning,  the Grade 7’s and 6’s took a brisk walk to Rondebosch
Common. Why? They were going to give it a good spring clean. We started out that morning at about
11:00am. It was a hot day and some people wore long pants because they were afraid that they would get ‘tick-bite-fever’ but it was not long before they regretted it. Loaded with plastic bags and rubber gloves we prepared ourselves for battle.

There were 44 children altogether, and Mrs. Masterson and Mrs. Dugmore were the supervising teachers. Together they helped us collect all the dirt that was scattered around the common.

There were things lying on the ground such as broken glass, pieces of newspaper, small sweet wrappers, plastic, cartons, tins and other things which did not belong there. We found many pieces of glass which are very dangerous because it is a great cause of fire. A large variety of things were found.

There is a team of friends, ‘Friends of the Common’, who get together and clean up the common twice a
week and even though they clean up, we found over 40 full bags of rubbish! A photograph was taken of us surrounding our 40 black bags. On our way back we were rewarded with Cokes that we each shared with a friend, it was very refreshing!

We were tired but our work was greatly appreciated and it was worth it. We were happy with our
completed task and headed back to school with pride and satisfaction.
One person even hooted in gratitude!

C is for Cape Town.  Many of us live in Cape Town. There is a well known mountain called Table Mountain.  Lots of people climb up Table Mountain. Table Mountain has lots of different animals like dassies, baboons and buck.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME

The Grade 2’s have been focusing on water as a valuable resource, particularly in South Africa.  As a written activity the class wrote on: “How can I save water in South Africa?”  The Grade 2’s also designed posters to complement their written work. Here are some of the ideas for saving water.

When you brush your teeth you must drink out of a mug, but if you drink from the tap you are wasting water.   Julia

Do not leave the tap dripping.   Cayleigh

If you go to wash your hands, don’t leave the tap open.   Lerisha

When you are running a shower and the  telephone rings, turn the tap off.  Julia

Fill your glass up to the amount that you need.  Katherine

Do not drink out of a running tap.   Helene

It is better to have a shower than a bath.   Cayleigh

Don’t water your garden when it is very hot. Helene

We need water so don’t waste it!  Justine

Do not leave the tap running when you are brushing your teeth.  Tara

Thunderstorms and Flowers

Hope Stars with our Hope candle
The Grade 5’s and Miss G (our Drama teacher), have been discussing ‘Hope’.  At first we made a thunderstorm with different sounds to describe the way we feel about crime and jealousy.  We decided to take it a bit further by reading a story called, ‘Hope for the Flowers’ by Trina Paulus.  Then we made horrible posters representing crime.  After that we made bright colourful stars and covered posters.  We made up plays under the theme ‘Don’t Give Up Hope’ and they all turned out to be very good.  Soon we will be able to light up our Hope candle. I think the Grade 5’s and Miss G learnt a lot. It was a wonderful experience. Thank you Miss G!
