FOCUS ON AFRICA

By Kathleen (Grade 5)

We have had many activities this term to try and focus on the positive features of our country, South Africa. This includes writing a poem about what it means to be a South African and why we would never leave South Africa.  We also wrote stories in which we pretended to be animals in South Africa. We wrote a poem where we pretended to be in the land, South Africa.  From this we learnt how important it is to preserve our land. We finished off the term by writing prose about our favourite places in South Africa.

I think that this was a worthwhile project because it made us understand the beauty and wonders of our
country instead of focusing only on the negative things in South Africa.  It taught us to view South Africa in an optimistic way.  After all, there really are a whole lot more good things in South Africa, than bad things.

Old But Interesting Places

Francesca and Priya (Grade 7)
The Grade 4’s studied our South African Heritage, specifically the Cape Heritage. They looked at the variety of styles of homes, starting with the earliest homes in Rondebosch. We have great history shown in the architecture, road names and place names. (They did a walk-about and they had 3 lecturers to come talk to them.)

To value Cape Town, they went on a drive-about to see places of interest in Cape Town namely the Rondebosch fountain, St. Paul’s Church, Mostert’s Mill, Rustenburg House and Rhodes Memorial. This added an understanding of how precious older buildings and places are to us.

CAPE TOWN is special because there are shops.  You can play and draw.  You
can see guinea fowl and they are lucky because they have food to eat all day long.
The people are special because they have lots of food to eat.  They also have
money but not the poor people.  I like the birds and flowers and we can play in
the playground.  And we have animals like a buck - and a zebra.
