Wave Applet

Instructions:

With the Wave Applet, you can look at different types of waves and make you own. You can compare the design of the wave with what you are hearing. Hopefully, you'll start noticing new things about sound in order to make your own waves!

Here's how to use the Wave Applet:

  1. The best part about this applet is that you can draw your own sound wave. To do this, click on the white line in the top screen in the middle and hold.
  2. While you are holding down your mouse button, move the line up or down and right or left. You should hear the sound begin. As you move the line, the sound will change.
  3. You can continue editing your wave by doing this over and over. Experiment and see what different kinds of sounds you can create.
  4. At any time, you can click the "Clear" button to erase the wave you have made and turn off the sound.

Other Features:

The set of six buttons under the main screen are preset waves. Click one to add the type of wave described on the button to the current wave. For example, clicking on the sine button will add a sine wave to the wave you already have. You can experiment with these buttons to see what each does to the wave.
You also have the option of adding the inverse of any of the preset waves to your current wave. To do this, click the "Invert" button so that it becomes highlighted in green, and then click on the preset button whose inverse you wish to add.
Adding numerous waves to your current wave will quickly cause your wave to extend beyond the edge of the window. When this happnes, your wave will be scaled so that it fits in the window.
On the right side of the screen there is a place to save your waves for future use, just like the predefined buttons. You can store up to three waves here. To save the current wave, click on the "Save Current Wave" button in the screen on the bottom right. In the box above, "User #1" should appear. If you ever want to go back to this wave, just click on that button ("User #1") and it will be added to the wave. Saving successive waves will bring up User #2 and User #3 buttons. If you want to delete any wave from memory, click the "Delete" button under the save button, and click on the button corresponding to the wave you wish to delete.
