Nokia has developed an innovative Mathematics programme for learners to use on mobile phones. Nokia Mobile Mathematics programme is accessible via the Social media application (MXit) where any phones that could use MXit could be used. In 2014 Nokia are expanding this programme to be available for all learners irrespective of whether they are in school or out of school.  Watch this space for more details to come!

Riitta Vanska, project manager for the initiative and senior manager mobile and learning solutions in Sustainability Operations at Nokia summed up the objectives of the project by saying:

“The project, called “MoMaths”, is built to enhance the traditional learning environment through a medium widely accessible and of considerable interest to learners. Most learners do not have access to computers however many of them do have access to a mobile phone”

In order to implement this ground-breaking initiative, Nokia has partnered with SAFIPA, Department of Education, MXit, Cell C, Maskew Miller Longman and MTN and is continuously bringing new partners on board in order to extend the reach of this project. SchoolNet SA has been working with provincial departments of education in order to roll out training to departmental officials and Grade 10 and 11 Mathematics teachers in South Africa. SchoolNet SA is also responsible for supporting teachers and learners who are participating in the project.

If you are not part of the project, but would like to join Nokia Mobile Mathematics, please be patient. Nokia Mobile Mathematics may expand the service to your school in future.
