Planning for Learner Success - Activity 2

Supporting Learner Self-Direction

  60 minutes
In learner-centred classrooms, learners are not always under the direct supervision of a teacher. To successfully manage their own learning, learners need to be self-directed learners. Self-direction is an important lifelong learning goal for learners of all ability levels. Self-direction skills help learners with special needs complete tasks successfully and independently at a level that challenges them to reach their potential in school, life, and work. During this activity, you explore a number of ways to use formative assessment to help all learners become independent learners.

Step 1: Thinking About Formative Assessments to Enhance Self-Direction

Unlike summative assessment, which occurs at the end of a project or project to inform teachers and learners about how successfully project learning outcomes have been achieved, formative assessment takes place throughout a project in formal and informal ways.
